World within Our Grasp

Hyperlink is almost always associated with the discourse of virtual imaging and technological simulation. The term Hyperlink adopted in this exhibition is that in its simplest context which can be defined as an articulation of signs on the reality of gigantic network which simultaneously forming new networks to construct creative ideology inside.

Hyperlinks in this curatorial frame try to interpret as well as to take practical steps in documenting how this large network initiated, developed, and maintained. In turn, this network then will be able to firmly determine the strategic position of an artist and established his existence in the system. Within the large network, an artist is required and challenged to embrace a new form of consciousness—the substantial consciousness instead of the artificial one.

This exhibition entitled ‘Hyperlinks’ is presented to serve as a significant sign inviting us to observe deeper in order to re-organize the positioning of creative activities of the artist representatively to the wider public. This mapping is significant because series of exhibition activities always involve various levels of stakeholders such as art gallery, art museum, art dealer, art collector, curator, art critic, and journalist. This network of stakeholders will continuously develop and in turn it will produce new and larger networks inside the circle of the initial net. If every artist brings and introduces his own networks along with its strength and potential to an exhibition, we can imagine how an exhibition activity will not only serve as an exhibition of art works but it will also play an important role in the interconnection of personal networks which eventually will form a gigantic new formation of networks with wider spectrum and stronger capacity. The unlimited spectrum and the power of this network in turn will at least be the trigger of the emergence of network explosion similar to data or network explosion in cybernetic space. Moreover, the personal vision and aesthetic ideology of each artist brought into the scene will give a strategic bargaining power to determine the system of networking and to invite stakeholders to enter the net and to be involved in it.

Hyperlinks then give significance to this exhibition because it serves as a spirit of sharing among the artists and stakeholders involved to continuously built relationship and to preserve the existing spirit of networking. The spirit then is expected to not only inspire parties involved to build wider and larger networks but also to challenge the artist to be able to build particular network involving access to the global discourse of fine arts which has concern on the establishment of aspects of plurality and universality.

Creating Limitless Network-Wrapping the World with Network

Contemporary fine art firmly placed plurality and universality as a new paradigm when we no longer think of East versus West and when we already put aside the problem of differences in each communal and personal creative vision. When we are able to do so then we systemically place ourselves in the free area in wide perspective. Obviously, chain of networks from its smallest link to its wider and multi level networks can only be develop inside an artistic consciousness that has global orientation. It seems that inside the alteration and development of network’s infrastructure nowadays we can see its integration with way of thinking, attitude, and conceptual representation of artists which continuously open the opportunity while celebrating the wildness of aspects of visual technique in dealing with subject matter.

If we place this understanding closer to the community then we can see that this consciousness to build global networks is indirectly connected with and always able to be associated to the context of network within the virtual world. The reason is simple, the virtual world provides easy, fast, practical, and efficient tools to enable network to be initiated and developed. The highest achievement of virtual networks can now be put in an equal position with the highest achievement in direct relationship with stakeholders itself. The simulation of network in the virtual space convinces us to collect various approaches in the array of developing discourses from the point of view of discourse market aspect and market discourse aspect. This current mediator is not only regarded as the extension of interpersonal communication, but also the extension of almost every aspect of human life (action, reaction, and communication). Thus, it is able to transform various kinds of business activity, economic movement, and creative politics which directly related to the value of an artist.

Artist with contemporary vision is now able to do all kinds of activity (cultural, social, and economy) without having to move within space and time from one station to another because those stations have been interconnected virtually through internet networks and cyberspace. The presence of a universal language that supports the simplicity of many webs is called Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). It sorts files so that the computer can arrange data in the track and allow it to link to other files—hyperlinks are generally marked with blue color. Just click on the blue lines on your computer and you will immediately be connected to other the files in other Uniform Resource Locators (URL). This magnificent network in HTML then enables every person to create contents and place them in the web. The result is a data explosion. This is a simple description of hyperlinks in the context of cybernetic world.

Now, in a different perspective we are situated in the discourse as well as praxis of hyperlinks. The description above shows that every artist with their personal role, network capacity, and sociological existence will always be surrounded by their networks. It means that every individual is consistently creating and developing limitless network system which is able to cover the world with networks. In this exhibition we can see how Agus ‘baqul’ Purnomo, Anggar Prasetyo, Antoni Eka Putra, Askanadi, AT Sitompul, Ida Bagus Putu Purwa, Wahyu Gunawan, Donni Kurniawan, Entang Wiharso, Firman Lie, Kukuh Nuswantoro, Lugas Syllabus, Sigit Santoso, Yurnalis Bes, Valasara, Wadino, Wayan Redika, Deddy Sufriadi, Anthonius Kho, Hadi Soesanto and Freddy Sofyan build their career as an artist by developing and maintaining their networks as well their interpersonal relationship in an exceptionally good manner.

In the free flow of information and global culture nowadays, the opportunity of certainty is widely open and completed with limitless access. In fact, many artists utilize the cyberspace network as an effective mediator to place themselves in the map of the world of global fine art. It seems that one of the characteristics of contemporary society convince us that the world is indeed within our grasp. Transparently, this consciousness has transformed into collective commitment to link and unite the vision of creativity in art community. It is a very interesting development because it signifies global consciousness as a need rather than a technological trend an sich.

In our artistic life nowadays, without global consciousness there will not be inter networks communication which consequently will block the development and will make acceleration of network’s accumulation impossible to achieve. Artist have limitless role in facing the growth and acceleration of the accumulation of networks because the large spectrum of their networks will support them to achieve their existential recognition inside and outside their networks. Whether or not an artist will get his acknowledgement depends highly on the establishment of their network system. We can imagine how hard it is for an artist to communicate his art works that he really believes in without sufficient networks. We can also see the magnificent success of an artist that has realization, dedication, and extra ordinary work ethic to build and develop his networks limitlessly.

This means that global consciousness is significantly important to grow existential consciousness inside the passion of mobilizing networks to guarantee the artists its best position and to give him powerful bargaining position in wider public. Entang Wiharso, Dadang Christanto, Heri Dono, and Eddi Hara just to name a view are artists that already has an established position in the world of fine art which enable them to not only enjoy the sensation of their networks but to also overcome the problem of the lack of confidence and determination of our artists.

Those artists mentioned above have already been able to break through the boundaries and create a global networks with a strong believe that only a strong and harmonic network will guarantee the acknowledgement of their greatest achievements. Certainly, this is a kind of simple elaboration to explore hyperlinks further.
